David Abolafia has been writing about music for more than 30 years. He has been a critic, a playwright, an actor, a stand-up comic and a "Jeopardy!" champion. His play, “Dead,” has been performed around the English-speaking world. He is also a cancer survivor, and he plays bass... badly. He lives in Sarasota, Florida, with his wife and son.

Myotonic dystrophy, also called myotonic muscular dystrophy (MMD) is a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle wasting and weakness. Although it is the most common form of muscular dystrophy that manifests in adulthood, it is still considered a "rare" disease, affecting less than 200,000 Americans each year. There is no cure for MMD; treatment focuses on managing complications related to the disease.

In creating a character who lives with MMD, David hopes to raise both awareness and understanding of this lesser-known illness, which is an ongoing concern for his wife, Lisa. David will be donating a portion of his royalties from the sale of Thunder Rolls and future Jimmy Thunder mysteries to the Muscular Dystrophy Association -- incredible people who do essential work.

Rock god Kevin Cosgrove is dying, about to be unplugged from a drug-related coma. Before he shot up for the last time, he left a will of sorts, bequeathing everything to "the real Ruby Deuce": the inspiration behind his band Cause for Alarm's #1 single, and a mystery that has baffled music lovers for 20 years.

Vertical Records reaches out to James Thurber, aka Jimmy Thunder -- Kevin's former compadre in power chords, and one of the few bridges to the past Kevin didn't burn. Having turned his back on the music industry a decade earlier, Jimmy is reluctant to get involved. But he eventually agrees to hunt for Ruby Deuce... for a price.

At the hospital on Kevin's dying day, Jimmy meets D.L., a young fan holding a vigil of one for her fallen idol. Once the final notes of Kevin's song fall silent, Jimmy sets out on his enigmatic quest, allowing D.L. to tag along.

They quickly discover that someone is hunting them -- someone who knows the truth about Ruby Deuce, and wants her secret to stay buried. But as Jimmy and D.L. continue on their mission, more secrets are revealed -- with intimate truths pulling these strangers closer.

The question becomes, can they locate Ruby Deuce before their stalker takes action to stop them once and for all?

“In Thunder Rolls, a fast-paced and well-constructed thriller, ex-rocker Jimmy Thunder is dragged back into the chaotic world of rock and roll to identify an unknown inheritor, and an enduring rock mystery: The real ‘Ruby Deuce,’ the smoke-like focus of an iconic #1 hit. Highly recommended.”

--DP LYLE, award-winning author of the Jake Longly thriller series

“Terrific premise, compelling characters and a breathlessly fast-moving plot. David Abolafia's story of an ex-rock star’s search through his musical past to uncover a deadly secret is a great read!”

--R.G. BELSKY, author of Yesterday's News and Below the Fold

“David Abolafia is a distinct new voice in the mystery genre.  His debut novel, Thunder Rolls, introduces Jimmy Thunder, a ‘hair band’ has-been rocker, and the fragile, quirky fan, D.L. – an incongruous but compelling duo who will stay with you long after the last page. From the intriguing opening bars to the final crash of chords, Abolafia writes in 4/4 time, giving us a back-stage glimpse into the world of rock and roll as he weaves a tale that is part mystery, part love story, and part one man’s journey into his past.  Music tells our stories…”
